Comms.ID Sanctions

Australian sanctions screening

Screen an individual, entity or vessel against the Australian Sanctions Consolidated List published by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. A match is a candidate for review, not a determination. Live screening is for registered apps; this page shows a demonstration on fictional sample names only.

Try it

Demonstration only: these names are fictional samples, and the reply is the contract's example. Nothing on this page is screened against the live list.

Fictional sample names

Sample reply (demonstration, not a screening result)

Choose a sample name. The reply shown is the contract's example, labelled as a demonstration.

Quickstart

  1. Sign in to the Companion App and register your app. Enable Sanctions only; one product needs no other.
  2. Create your app's key pair on your server; Companion registers the public key.
  3. Call the API with a short-lived token signed by your key:
curl -X POST https://api.comms.id/sanctions/v1/screen \
  -H "authorization: Bearer $(npx comms-id token sanctions)" \
  -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"type":"Individual","name":"Example Person","dateOfBirth":"1970-06-15"}'

Operations

  • POST /sanctions/v1/screen — Screen one individual, entity or vessel against the Australian Sanctions Consolidated List (DFAT): exact names and aliases, optionally narrowed by date and place of birth. The reply carries every possible match with its evidence, the list generation and its freshness. It refuses to answer from a stale list.

How it compares

Each cell below quotes the vendor's own public page, with the date it was read, including where each one sends personal information. Where a page does not say, the cell says so; nothing is inferred.

DFAT (Australian Sanctions Office)

Consolidated List download

The list itself: every individual, entity and vessel under Australian sanctions, maintained and regularly updated by the Australian Sanctions Office, published as a spreadsheet (last updated 29 September 2026). A file, not a screening service.

An Australian government department; it discloses personal information overseas only for its consular and diplomatic functions, under the APPs or with consent. Downloading the list sends it no names.

No screening queries exist: the list is downloaded whole. Its websites may collect cookies, IP addresses and cached form information.

Not stated; the list is published for download on the page with no price shown.

OpenSanctions

OpenSanctions API (sanctions and PEP screening)

Carries the Australian Consolidated List as one dataset among many (1.9 million entities), refreshed daily, checked every two hours; a multi-property matcher, not exact-match only.

A German company (OpenSanctions Datenbanken GmbH, Berlin); transfers outside the European Economic Area rest on an EU adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses. No Australian location.

Website visits go to server log files (IP address, pages, time, country); the policy does not say what is kept of the names sent to the screening API.

€0.10 per query on the API, with free non-commercial access and bulk licensing by contact.

LSEG

World-Check KYC screening

A global risk-intelligence database of sanctions, enforcement, PEP and adverse-media records from public-domain sources, through screening software and APIs; the Australian list is not described on its own.

Coverage and limits

  • Coverage: every name and alias on the Consolidated List, matched exactly, with optional narrowing by date of birth.
  • Every reply carries the list's generation and the time it was last checked, so a stale list is visible.
  • A candidate is for a person to review. The service never decides that someone is sanctioned.
  • Public visitor mode is never offered for Sanctions: every call comes from a registered app's server.
  • On this page, each visitor may make 10 requests per 10 seconds and 40 requests per 60 seconds. Over the limit, the reply is 429 FAIR_USE_CEILING with Retry-After.
  • A registered app starts with 150 requests for each product and each day (an owner's apps share one daily total). Over it, the reply is 429 FAIR_USE_CEILING with Retry-After and the reset time. A verified owner can ask for a higher ceiling in the Companion App. Every product is free under fair use.

Query privacy. The name and optional date of birth you send are screened only against the DFAT Consolidated List stored in Australia; they are not sent to any other service. Comms.ID keeps no query text: request content is never logged, Worker logs are off, and usage counts record only the app, the product and the day.
